Refinance your collector car loan
Already financed? Move the loan into better terms. There is no ownership time limit on a refinance — only a balance left to refinance. Subject to credit approval.
Two products, two different rules
These get discussed as one thing and they are not. Knowing which one you are asking for saves a conversation, and often saves the deal.
Refinance — any time there is a balance
Replaces an existing loan with a new one on different terms. There is no ownership window and no deadline. As long as money is still owed on the car, the loan can be reviewed — whether you bought it last quarter or six years ago.
Cash-out — only within six months of purchase
Delayed financing on a car you bought recently, usually with cash, to put that capital back to work. The six-month limit runs from the purchase date and is firm. See cash-out financing.
Neither one is a title loan. We are not lending against a car you have owned outright for years at a punitive rate. A refinance replaces existing financing; a cash-out is delayed financing on a recent purchase. If you have owned the car free and clear beyond the six-month window, this is not the product you are looking for, and we would rather tell you that now than take the application.
Six reasons a refinance pays for itself
Your credit profile improved since you bought
A score that moved up a tier, or twelve months of clean payment history on the car itself, changes the terms available to you. The loan you signed reflects who you were at the desk that day, not who you are now.
You took whatever was on offer at closing
Financing arranged at the dealership is convenient rather than optimised. It is frequently the single easiest thing to improve after the fact, and improving it costs you nothing but the paperwork.
The original loan was underwritten on a credit box, not the car
A general-purpose lender prices a 1973 Carrera RS the same way it prices a commuter sedan, because its model has nowhere to put provenance. A specialty financing source that understands condition, documentation and the collector market can structure the same transaction differently.
You want a different term
Shorter to cut total interest paid, or longer to bring the monthly payment down — with clear eyes about what the longer term costs you overall.
There is a balloon payment coming
A balloon is a deadline, not a discount. Refinancing it into an amortizing loan before it lands turns a lump sum you have to solve for into a payment schedule you already know you can carry.
A borrower needs adding or removing
Changing who is on the note generally requires a new loan rather than an amendment to the old one. Divorce, an estate, a partner buying in — all of it runs through a refinance.
And four times it is not worth the paperwork
We would rather talk you out of a refinance that does not help than put you through an application that ends badly.
You are near the end of the term
Interest is front-loaded. Late in the schedule most of what you are paying is principal, so there is very little interest left to save and the fees can swallow all of it.
Your current note carries a prepayment penalty
Check the existing agreement before you shop. A penalty large enough to eat the benefit turns a sensible refinance into an expensive one.
You owe more than the car appraises for
Loan-to-value limits apply to a refinance just as they do to a purchase. A shortfall has to be covered in cash at closing, which is usually the thing that stops the deal.
The fees exceed the savings
Lien transfer, title and registration costs vary by state. On a short remaining balance they can outweigh a modest improvement in rate. Run the total, not the monthly.
What actually gets assessed
Four things, weighed together. No single one of them decides the outcome on its own.
The car
Year, model, condition, mileage, documentation and provenance — assessed as a collectible asset rather than against a depreciation table. This is where a specialty financing source differs most from a bank.
The transaction
The payoff amount measured against the appraised value. That ratio is where loan-to-value limits bite, and it is the most common reason a refinance comes back smaller than the owner expected.
Your credit profile
Scores of 650 or higher are generally recommended, though a score alone does not decide the outcome. A real person reviews the whole file rather than a scorecard returning an automatic answer.
Documentable personal income
Assessed as income you can evidence personally, not gross business revenue. This catches out owners whose companies turn over considerably more than they draw, so it is worth knowing before you apply.
What to have ready
- The current payoff quote from your existing lienholder, including the good-through date
- Title and registration showing the recorded lien
- A certified appraisal or condition report, depending on the vehicle and the amount
- Proof of insurance, which will need the new lienholder added once the lien is recorded
- Documentable personal income, plus identity verification
Digital AutoFi’s programs are simple-interest with no prepayment penalty on eligible programs, so interest accrues on the outstanding balance. Paying ahead or refinancing again later genuinely reduces what you pay rather than running into a precomputed penalty.
Check what is attached to the loan you are replacing
A service contract or gap product sold alongside the original financing is usually cancellable for a pro-rata refund when that loan is paid off early — and that refund is routinely forgotten, because nobody involved in the payoff has a reason to raise it.
Before you close, confirm whether coverage you want to keep carries over to the new loan or has to be rewritten, and make sure your insurer updates the lienholder on the policy once the new lien is recorded. Two phone calls, occasionally worth four figures.
Compare on total cost, not the monthly
A longer term almost always produces a smaller payment and a larger total. Put your payoff amount in as the loan amount and compare the whole cost of the remaining schedule against the whole cost of the new one.
